Patna: After a video of Congress legislator Vinay Verma gone viral in which he is seen consuming alcoholic beverage despite total prohibition in Bihar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Kumar Modi took Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to task asking him to put the Congress leader in jail and urged Congress to sack the law-breaker immediately.

Claiming over 50% of the ministers and legislators in the Nitish government regularly imbibed alcoholic beverages and were now compelled to pursue their addiction secretly; Modi challenged the Chief Minister to conduct a study if he thought he was wrong in his assertion.

"If you don't believe me, ask Shyam Bahadur Singh, the Janata Dal – U legislator from Barharia," Modi said alluding to another video surfacing in 2014 where he was seen dancing in a vulgar manner with a bar girl in a state of inebriation.

Chastising Kumar of failing to implement his own policy, the BJP leader said that this was the time for the Chief Minister to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

"Cops arrive four hours after the video of Vinay Verma surfaced. What took them this long? It is obvious Nitish Kumar is trying to protect the Congress leader," the former Deputy Chief Minister said following his weekly Janata Durbar in Patna on Tuesday.

Modi further said that despite the ban, liquor was being sold all over Bihar right under the nose of the police and state government but the Chief Minister was ignoring this fact because it made him look like a failure.

Mocking Kumar for touting crime rate having gone down by 27% in the short period of 25 days since prohibition went into effect in Bihar, the BJP leader said that the number was clearly made up to make the Chief Minister look good.

"Does the CM think that before committing any crime, the criminals would go out and get drunk? The truth is, since ban on liquor went into effect, crime rate jumped as is evident by a series of attacks on Bihar courts," Modi said adding it was Nitish Kumar who was encouraging his legislators to continue drinking by asking them to drink behind closed doors lest they wanted to get caught in sting operations.
