Patna: Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Sudhir Kumar Srivastava, at a function at the Wheeler Senate Hall on Thursday, inaugurated the centennial celebration of the university by making big announcements that, if not impossible, would be extremely hard to keep considering the deep political division within the university coupled with the government's apathy towards improving education in general.

Like the most of the state that is stung by the mythical power of 'Apps', the Vice Chancellor said a special 'app' for mobile with chockful of information was being designed that would help everyone associated with the university including the students, teachers, faculties, former students, and the university employees.

"Patna University has produced thousands of luminaries who have made name for themselves and for the university and the state of Bihar. Our attempt is to bring these ex-students together using the power of social network to seek their help in making the university a world-class center of learning," Dr. Srivastava said.

The year-long celebration would include various kinds of contests like debates and essay writing competitions along with seminars, conferences, and workshops on the past, present, and future of the university. Poster-making, slogan writing, quiz contests and photo exhibitions would also mark the centennial celebration, he said.

On the occasion, Patna University students performed songs to mark the commencement of the celebration.

The inauguration of the program, however, was not without controversies as the newly-elected President of the Patna University Randhir Kumar slammed the Vice Chancellor for failing to invite any big name like Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to inaugurate the event.

PUTA General Secretary Anil Kumar also criticized the arrangement saying the opening was not as big as the glorious history of the university that, he said, had produced great personalities in its 100 years of history.
