Patna: Criminals in Patna under Danapur police station on Thursday shot and killed a ward councilor during his morning walk just outside his flat in Naya Tola near Saguna Mor.
A supporter of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President Lalu Prasad Yadav and allegedly a member of the land mafia in Patna district, Kedar Rai, age 59, was gunned down outside his apartment by assailants as he and his brother Paras Rai left home for morning walk at around 5:30 am on Thursday.
His body was rushed to a private hospital in Raza Bazaar where he was declared dead on arrival.
Rai was hit at least three times – one in the head and two on his chest, police at the crime scene reported.
His brother, who was able to identify two of the assailants as Prem Ratan, an advocate, and Arjun Kumar, said that two men overpowered him while a third man shot his brother from a close range. The criminals then beat up Paras Rai before fleeing in the cover of the darkness.
Kedar Rai had been elected from Ward No. 15 for a record fifth time. His wife Shobha Devi is also a Councilor from Ward No. 16.
Police later arrested four persons based on the statements of Paras Rai.
Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj said that the crime appeared to be related to an ongoing dispute over some piece of land.
Officials said at least 15 criminal cases were lodged against the victim including some involving land-grabbing and forgery.
FIRs were lodged by the victim's brother against 21 individuals, some even family members.
Meanwhile, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, demanding a CBI probe in the incident, called the killing a 'political assassination' carried out at the behest of a 'very big leader'.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
