Patna: Hundreds of thousands of people witnessed the 'Burning' of Lanka' at Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Sunday marking the end of 10-day Durga Puja culminating with the 'slaying of Ravan and his two brothers signifying victory over evil as described in the Hindu mythology.
Prior to the slaying of the demon brothers, a 'jhanki' (tableau) of Lord Ram, Sita, Bharat, Lakshman, and Lord Hanuman toured the city before arriving at the Gandhi Maidan where the actor playing Lord Ram and his brothers shot arrows at the 70' effigies of the demon brothers around 5:20 pm signaling the pyro-technicians to begin the firework show that lit the sky for more than 15 minutes as the air rented with the chant of 'Jai Shri Ram'.
The program ended peacefully with no untoward incident reported at any time.
"Security officials were crawling both inside and outside the Gandhi Maidan to ensure the safety of the VIPs and the guests alike. We were also prepared to deal with the crowd leaving at the end of the function," Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manu Maharaj said.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
