Patna: Former Janata Dal-U MP from Jhanjharpur Mangani Lal Mandal who later joined hands with Upendra Kushwaha's Biihar Navnirman Manch earlier this June, received a setback on Friday after the Patna High Court declared his election null and void on account of failing to reveal in his nomination papers that he had two wives.

The court was hearing on a writ petition earlier filed in 2009 by Jhanjharpur voter Vishnudeo Bhandari who had claimed that Mandal had omitted some 'vital facts' about himself in his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections.

"The candidate is required by law to reveal all the facts about himself in terms of his assets, his age, educational background, criminal cases, if any, and the number of immediate family members, among others. Mangani Lal Mandal was married to Arti Mandal but then he also married another woman named Sunita Devi. This fact was not revealed in his election papers with intent to deceive the election commission," Bhandari had said in his petition.

After nearly 100 days since the petition was filed, a single bench of Patna High Court comprising Justice V. N. Sinha declared Mandal's election invalid.
