Patna: In a first ever for Patna Junction, railway officials on Wednesday declared the Rs. 2.5- crore escalator installed on Platform Number 10 open for public.
East-Central Railway (ECR) General Manager Madhuresh Kumar, in the presence of other officials and thousands of passengers and onlookers, took the first ride on the escalator that, he said, would benefit over Rs. 1.5 lakh passengers and visitors on a daily basis.
Kumar said this was the first such facility under the Danapur Division of the ECR and plans were already afoot to build another escalator on Platform Number 1 for the benefit of the passengers, particularly the elderly ones.
Other railway stations in Bihar where escalators are to be installed include Muzaffarpur and Samastipur, he said.
ECR Chief Public Relations Officer Amitabh Prabhakar informed the escalators were built in India based on European technology.
Thousands of people, many of whom had never experienced a ride up or down on an escalator in their lives, appeared both amused and ecstatic. The joy was particularly seen in the eyes of the elderly people who appeared relieved with the 'moving stairs' as they put it while talking to the media.
