Double Whammy for Siwan MP Mohammed Shahabuddin
Patna: December 7, 2005
In another setback for the incarcerated Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP from Siwan Mohammed Shahabuddin, a court in Siwan, on Tuesday, rejected his bail plea in the violation of Arms Act following the confession of one of his ex-associates Jamalpur.
Additional District and Sessions judge of Siwan V. N. Mishra, after hearing the arguments from both defense and prosecution counsels, turned down the bail petition of Shahabuddin who faces charges, among many others, of acquiring and owning illegal firearms.
Shahabuddin's former associate Jamaluddin, during an interrogation, had confessed he was holding the foreign-made rifles in his custody at the request of the Siwan MP.
Jamaluddin was arrested last April during a raid at Shahabuddin's house in Pratappur in Siwan district by the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Ratn Sanjay.
In another development concerning Shahabuddin, the state government under the Indian Criminal Penal Code Section 268, barred the Siwan MP from appearing in court for next six months. This was done in view of the severity of the crimes Shahabuddin has been charged with, officials in Patna said.
