Police Station In-charge Gunned Down in Jamalpur

Jamalpur: December 20, 2005

In a police-criminal encounter on Monday night in Jamalpur, Surendra Kumar, the Jamalpur police station in-charge was shot and killed though the police also managed to gun down a dreaded criminal Akku Singh in the encounter.

At around 8:30 pm, Kumar, who had joined the Jamalpur police station only a week ago, along with a police team left for Rampur locality to capture Akku Singh who had been playing hide and seek with the police for several months.

As soon as Kumar's jeep arrived in the area, the criminals, taking advantage of the darkness, opened indiscriminate firing at the police team. One bullet hit Kumar on his chest killing him instantly. With bullets flying from every side, the police managed to strike the gangster Akku Singh who also died on the spot.

At least one more police officer was hurt in the incident. He was taken to the Jamalpur hospital where he was being treated for bullet injury.

Senior police officials including the Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravindran Shankaran, DSP (Headquarters) Anjani Kumar Sinha, the Commissioner, the District Magistrate (DM), and the DIG arrived at the hospital to pay their respect to the slain officer who died in the line of duty.

Situation remains tense in Rampur where security has been heightened. Raids are also being conducted to apprehend other members of the Akku gang.
