Human Resources Minister to Consider Demand for an IIT
New Delhi: May 5, 2005
Much to the delight of thousands of Bihari students, the Minister for Human Resources Development, M. A. A. Fatmi, during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, said that his ministry would seriously take a look at the possibility of opening an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bihar that would give the much-needed fillip to the state education that has been lagging in all areas since last couple of decades.
Fatmi was responding to a question posed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Ram Kripal Yadav when he said that the demand for an IIT in Bihar was quite a legitimate one and every effort would be made to open the institute in the state that would not only produce quality engineers, it would also provide a huge opportunity to the aspiring engineering students of Bihar who currently have to leave the state to acquire such education.
Speaking on behalf of those demanding for an IIT in Bihar, Yadav said that with the bifurcation of state, all the well-known technical institutes are now part of Jharkhand leaving Bihar with absolutely nothing.
It may be recalled that a couple of weeks ago, a number of people from Bihar started an online petition for the support of an IIT in Bihar. Apparently, Yadav was moved enough by the petitioners' desire to raise the question in the Lok Sabha.
Now it's time to wait and watch whether Fatmi was simply engaging in political rhetoric or was really serious about opening an IIT in the state.

| It is certainly a happy start. But the minister is far from making any commitment. We should take this as a political statement only. Pressure needs to be built up continuously. - J. S. Sharma, Bangalore - May 10, 2005 |
