Spurious Liquor Claims Seven Lives in Motihari

Motihari: November 14, 2004

Seven people in Motihari district were reported dead after consuming spurious liquor on the eve of Diwali on Friday night with more than a dozen others struggling for their lives at a local hospital, officials in Motihari said on Saturday.

The incident took place near Raxaul at the Indo-Nepal border after several people became sick following consumption of hooch at an illegal liquor-manufacturing establishment. They were rushed to the Duncan Hospital but seven persons died within a matter of hours. Others were still being treated at the hospital, authorities said.

The police is investigating the case.

It may be recalled that several people died under similar circumstances last year as well in Motihari district. Many also became blind after consuming illicit liquor. The state is yet to punish the makers of such poisonous drinks.
