Lalu Yadav Agreeable to One-Day Election in Bihar

Patna: December 8, 2004

For once, agreeing with the Janata Dal (U) leader Nitish Kumar, the Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Lalu Prasad Yadav, on Tuesday, said that considering the current political situation in Bihar, it would be better if the Assembly elections were held only on one day instead of spread over two or three days as had been the norm before.

"We will soon meet with the Election Commission and ask him to hold the elections in Bihar on one day and do away with the convention of stretching it to multiple days," Yadav said in Patna.

Yadav, however, did not elaborate on what caused the change in his heart. Earlier, Nitish Kumar and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Narayan Singh had suggested the same thing saying one-day election would prevent criminals from engaging in electoral irregularities that have become a regular feature in all elections in Bihar.
