Samajwadi Party to Lead 'Third Front' in Bihar
Patna: December 24, 2004
In an attempt to offer a serious resistance to the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar, the Samajwadi Party agreed to form alliance with Samata Party and six other parties what they claimed to become the 'Third Front' in Bihar.
Other parties who are also part of the so-called Third Front are CPI-ML, Samajwadi Janata Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal, RSP, Shoshit Samaj Dal and Bharatiya Momeen Front. Besides the CPI-ML, the other three parties are almost unheard of and hardly are any factor in the coming Assembly elections in Bihar.
Samata party president Brahmanand Mandal, during a press meet on Thursday, said that the leaders of all six parties will meet in Patna on Friday to discuss an election strategy that will successfully take on the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in the state Assembly elections and issues related with seat-sharing with an eye on formulating the Common Minimum Program (CMP) – a political euphemism for short-term election arrangement.
"Our coalition front will offer an alternative to the Lalu Prasad Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar where the only people who are safe and happy are people in power and criminals backed by RJD leaders," Mandal said.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (M), announced its decision to continue to give support to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar. Party leader Sitaram Yechuri, while talking to reporters in New Delhi, said that it was imperative to support the RJD in Bihar to keep the communal forces like the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) at bay.
