Police in Patna scrambled to solve the mystery surrounding the brutal killings of Patna University History professor Dr. Papiya Ghosh and her 70-year old maid Malti Devi who were found dead of multiple stab wounds at her residence in Pataliputra Colony on Sunday morning as friends and family members tried to come to grip with the tragedy.
Dr. Ghosh's personal vehicle, a Maruti car; a computer, an air-conditioner, and some other items were taken away from her house indicating burglary was probably the main motive behind the gruesome crime, Zonal IG Rajvardhan Sharma said.
The crime was committed anytime between 11:00 pm Saturday and 4:00 am Sunday, he said.
So far, no arrest has been made in the case.
While there were no sign of forced entry, the police believe the criminal or criminals probably gained entry into the house by climbing the bamboo scaffold erected outside the house for a paint job.
The police are trying to locate the labors who were engaged in whitewashing the building, officials said.
Incidentally, the crime scene is located only a few yards from the house of Bihar Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah.
The bodies of Professor Ghosh and her maid were recovered by another maid who arrived at the house on Sunday morning.
Ghosh's younger sister Tuktuk Ghosh, an Indian Administrative Service officer posted at New Delhi, rushed to Patna after hearing the tragic death of her sister.
