American Girl's Death in Gaya Could be Accidental: Police
Gaya: March 14, 2006
The police in Gaya, on Monday, refused to confirm if the mysterious death of an American tourist Ashley Carney was in fact a case of suicide as earlier reported in the media saying the accident theory, considering the circumstantial evidences, could also not be ruled out.
Gaya Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Jain, while talking to reporters on Monday, said though it was initially believed that the 21-year old Ashley could have jumped to her death from the Root Institute of Meditation in Gaya where she had arrived on March 6 along with over a dozen other foreigners, going by the evidences surrounding her death, it appeared she either accidentally fell from the balcony or someone pushed her over from behind.
The police, however, refused to divulge any more details in the case saying an investigation was on and only after medical and forensic reports were received, a conclusion could be reached.
A team of prominent medical experts from Magadh Medical College were entrusted to conduct an autopsy on Ashley's body after which it had to be sent to Delhi in a casket. A gynecologist was also included in the team to determine if Ashley was sexually assaulted before her mysterious death.
