Accidental Grenade Blast Victim Dies at PMCH

Babita Devi, the wife of a prisoner in Jehanabad jail who was seriously injured on March 28 when a Bihar Military Police (BMP) jawan accidentally pulled the safety pin of a grenade causing an explosion, after battling for life for five days, succumbed to her injuries at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Monday.
Besides her incarcerated husband Bhushan Paswan, the unfortunate victim leaves behind two children aged 6 and 3.
The hospital will release the body of Babita Devi to her relatives on Tuesday following an autopsy, hospital officials said.
Angry relatives, demanding punitive actions against the erring BMP jawan Bharat Thapa and monetary compensation to the family, said they would not cremate the body until justice is served in their case.
Meanwhile, people in Jehanabad, after hearing the news of the death Babita Devi, surrounded the residence of Jehanabad District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar demanding actiona against Thapa and compensation for the family members.
Situation was eventually brought under control after the DM assured the protestors that the government had accepted their demands and will release the victim's husband from jail on parole to attend the funeral service of his wife.
It may be recalled that on March 28, BMP jawan Bharat Thapa was cleaning his weapons when he accidentally pulled the safety pin of the grenade. Realizing his mistake, Thapa lobbed the grenade in a small sandy area but the explosion injured three jail visitors, including Babita Devi, sending them to hospitals.
