Patna: April 3, 2007
The Patrakar Nagar police in Patna on Tuesday raided a house in Sakri Gali under Alamganj police station in Agam Kuan and recovered Ranjit Kumar, a.k.a. Chhotu, an Intermediate student who was reported abducted a few days ago.
The police arrested Chhotu's own maternal uncle Sujit Kumar, his cousin Gautam and three more persons, including a woman, who is said to be the mistress of the uncle, from the house of one Kalyan Gupta.
As reported, following raids at several places in Hajipur, Samastipur, and Ara, the police finally found one Praveen Kumar in Patna City who spilled the beans on the kidnappers who had been demanding Rs. 20 lakh in ransom money from the father of the victim Singar Singh.
Interestingly, Sujit Kumar had accompanied Chhotu's father to the Kankarbagh police station to file a report of missing person following the sudden disappearance of Chhotu. All along the investigation, Sujit Kumar remained in touch with the police knowing their next move while keeping one step ahead of them.
Besides Chhotu's uncle and cousin, the police also arrested Sujit Kumar's mistress and two more relatives of the victim.
On Sunday, Sujit Kumar called his brother-in-law and lowered his rate from Rs. 20 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh in exchange for the freedom of Chhotu. The police, sensing a breakthrough in the case, persuaded Singar Singh to not pay the money to the abductors, Kankarbagh police station inspector Ramakant Prasad said.
