Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, on the opening day of the two-day Mirror Conference sponsored by Stanford University, on Thursday, applauded the phenomenal economic growth of China while admonishing the Indians to understand the key differences between the two countries before making a head-to-head comparison.
"We must not forget that India is a democracy while there is one party system in China. This makes a world of difference in the way a country functions and implements its policies," Modi said.
"There are, however, lessons to be learnt from China. We must not become the slave to any 'ism' when it comes to the development of the nation. China, despite being a Communist country, adopted realistic policies and opened doors for foreign investment. Today, China has surpassed India in many sectors," the Deputy Chief Minister said.
Dr. Nicholas Hope, the deputy director of the Stanford Center for International Development said that there was no need for a state or a country to emulate other successful state or countries. "You have to find your own strengths and uniqueness and implement policies that are conducive to the growth of your state," he said.
Others to speak on the occasion included Planning Commissioner R. J. M. Pillai and C. Dasgupta of Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI).
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the conference.
"The conference will prove to be extremely beneficial to the development of Bihar,' N. K. Singh, state planning board vice-chairman and a former member of the Planning Commission said.
The Stanford team also invited the Chief Minister to visit America in June to attend a conference on economic development in India.
