Shahabuddin Loses Special Treatment in Siwan Jail
Patna: April 6, 2007
Following his recent involvement in a jail fracas that left several prisoners injured, the state administration, on Thursday, stripped the notorious Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP from Siwan, Mohammed Shahabuddin, of his special privileges that he had been accorded in Siwan Jail because of his VIP status.
The decision to take away Shahabuddin's privileges in the prison was taken by the state government following a report submitted by Siwan District Magistrate S. K. Mall who blamed the MP of inciting clashes between rival gangs in the jail and trying to re-assert his hegemony in the prison.
While Shahabuddin would continue to receive the medical care in the prison as mandated by the court, other privileges including his personal cook, newspaper, and television has been withdrawn, said Siwan jail officials.
Shahabuddin faces over three dozen criminal cases that range from murder to vehicle theft and nearly everything in-between.
Many in Patna, however, are not too amused by the so-called stripping of the Siwan MP's VIP status.
"Shahabuddin is no ordinary criminal. He is a powerful gangster, an RJD MP and has people in high places. He knows when, which, and how to pull a string that would not only re-establish is VVIP status in jail, he will make sure his opponents eat their words," a senior police official in Patna said.
