Sitaram Yechuri Plays the Failsafe Caste, BJP Cards

Patna: April 8, 2007

Photo by Shashi UttamCommunist leader Sitaram Yechuri, at the AIPSO meet in Patna on Sunday, appealed to all political parties to launch a nationwide stir against the Supreme Court's stay on reservation for the members of OBC in institutes of higher learning while also urging the UPA government to file a petition against the Supreme Court's decision.

"While nine of the Supreme Court justices have come out in favor of reservation for the OBC in educational institutions, only two have opposed it. This needs to be challenged and we hope the Central government, without further delay, would file a petition against the apex court's decision," Yechuri said.

The leftist leader further demanded reservation in jobs and admissions in various schools for the Muslims saying if the Indian Constitution needs to be amended for that then it should be done soon.

Yechuri accused the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to stir up communal trouble in the nation in the name of celebrating Golwalkar anniversary. He also criticized the Nitish government in Bihar for siding with the BJP saying after 15 years, signs of communal trouble are once again beginning to be visible in the state.

The communist leader, however, failed to provide an example on which basis he was making the accusation against the NDA government in Bihar.
