Gay March in Patna
Patna: April 11, 2007
Dozens of homosexual men coming from a number of states took out a march under the joint banner of Bihar People's Progressive Foundation and Amitya of West Bengal on Wednesday demanding respect and an end to their harassment by straight men and women, both physically and psychologically.
The rally started at the youth hostel and culminated at Gandhi Maidan where they pitched their demands for respect and security.
"This is 21st century and all over the world the gays and lesbians are coming out of their closets demanding equal rights and end to discrimination against them. We are also human beings and just because of our different sexual orientation, we are the object of ridicule and constant harassment from those who disapprove of our lifestyle," said a gay activist dressed and made-up as a woman.
Earlier, the group took part in a meeting to discuss problems currently faced by the homosexuals and transvestites including threat from HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted disease, negative social stigma, and harassment from straight men and how to deal with them.
