High Court Concerned Over Law Colleges' Predicament

Patna: April 11, 2007

Alarmed by the plummeting standard of education at many law colleges, the Patna High Court, on Wednesday, directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to conduct a thorough investigation into the functioning of various law colleges in Bihar and submit its report by May 14.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice J. N. Bhatt and Justice Shailesh Kumar Sinha, while hearing on a PIL submitted by advocate M. P. Gupta, directed the BCI conduct a probe into the functioning of a number of law colleges and suggest ways to improve their educational standard.

Gupta, in his petition, said that legal education in Bihar had sunk to a new low and was in dire need of being pulled out its miseries. "There are hardly any permanent teachers in law colleges. Eight colleges have already been derecognized by the BCI and if efforts are not made soon enough, we are in the danger of losing many more law colleges in Bihar," said Gupta.
