Social activists and politicians in Patna on Saturday observed the birth anniversary of the father of the Indian Constitution Dr. B. R. Ambedkar by organizing a number of events eulogizing the socialist leader for his role in the empowerment of dalits and backwards in the nation.
While Governor R. S. Gavai and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar put garlands at the statue of Ambedkar, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (U) leaders participated at a function organized by the Ambedkar Institute of Higher Education.
"The British tried to break India on caste and region bases but Ambedkar fought against it and worked to build an India that was devoid of any such differences," BJP leader and Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav said.
Dr. Ambedkar was not an individual; he was an institution who worked to give a new direction to the people from not so privileged background," said Yadav.
A cultural show and dance competition was held in honor of Dr. Ambedkar at Vidyapati Bhawan.
Meanwhile, at the Income Tax roundabout, Ambedkar supporters staged a dharna demanding to include Ambedkar's image on Indian currency. "Like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Ambedkar dedicated his life for the nation and if there was one national personality who deserved to be on the Indian currency, it would have to be Dr. Ambedkar," said the activists.
