Woman Returning from Ganga Ghat Shot Dead
Patna: April 14, 2007
Criminals in their teens on early Saturday morning shot and killed a 25-year old woman in Patna City as she returned home with other family members after taking a dip in Ganga at Sri Govind Singh ghat on the occasion of Mesh Sankranti, the Patna police said.
The victim who was identified as Meena Sinha a.k.a. Anupama Sinha had gone to the Ganga to offer prayers with her cousin, sister-in-law, and niece at 5:15 on Saturday morning.
As they returned home at around 7:00 am, someone shot Meena from behind. She collapsed on the ground as relatives and other passers by rushed to pick her up. By the time the police arrived, Meena had already breathed her last.
She was rushed to the Nalanda Medical College Hospital where she was announced dead on arrival.
After the customary autopsy, the victim was cremated at Khajekalan ghat.
The incident enraged the shocked residents in the area who accused the police of acting too slow despite the close proximity of the police station from the crime scene. "It took them nearly half an hour to arrive which resulted in the death of Meena. Had they come on time, she may have been saved," the crowd complained.
Ajit Sinha, the brother of the victim, in his police report, said eyewitnesses saw four young boys running after the shooting with one of them carrying a gun in his hand.
The police are confident of catching the killers soon, they said.
