The safe that had been stored at the temple's priest's house was opened under close supervision of many officials including the blocked development officer Chandrashekhar who is also a member of the temple management committee.

The jewelries were used to decorate the idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati on special occasions including Shiv Ratri, the priest said.

Weighing nearly 15 kilogram, the gold jewelries are estimated to be of several lakh rupees.

Baikatpur is about 40 km east of Patna. Its original name was Baikunthpur but with the passage of time, it came to be known simply as Baikatpur. The Shiv Linga is about 30 inches from ground and 18 inches in diameter.

The temple is believed to be built by Raja Maan Singh in the 16th century.
