Protest in Patna Following Richard Gere-Shilpa Shetty Kiss
Patna: April 16, 2007
People in Patna on Monday burnt the effigy of Hollywood star Richard Gere to protest against the public display of affection involving controversial Indian film star Shilpa Shetty who he kissed in full public view while attending an AIDS awareness program in New Delhi.
Gere, the star of dozens of Hollywood movies including American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Pretty Woman, while exhorting a group of truck drivers to use condoms and practice safe sex, bent over and kissed Shetty on her cheek and hand.
Soon protests were held in Delhi, Mumbai, and other parts of the country including in Patna where the so-called 'Shilpa Shetty Fan Club' members burnt the effigy of Gere and chanted uncharitable slogans.
"Kissing is against Indian culture and Gere has insulted all women of India," shouted the protestors.
Elsewhere in Patna, some people also burnt the pictures of Shilpa Shetty calling her anti-Indian. "She has a horrible resume when it comes to acting in films but obviously she has a voracious appetite for controversies and scandals involving herself," said Birendra Kumar, a student of B. N. College said.
