Photo by Shashi UttamOfficials at the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), on Tuesday, were trying to ward off criticism after reports of medical discrimination against an HIV-infected patient who had been running from pillar to post to receive treatment for last six days surfaced in the media.

Bhushan Singh, the 45-year old native of Begusarai, talking to the media on Tuesday morning, said that after a minor operation earlier this month in Begusarai, he was diagnosed with being infected by HIV virus.

Doctors in Begusarai then referred him to the PMCH but as soon as the hospital officials in Patna found out he was HIV positive, they started to give him runarounds forcing him and his family, including his wife and old parents, to live under a tree within the hospital campus.

When the local media made the issue in local newspapers, the hospital finally agreed to admit him and he was rushed into the Emergency at the directive of the PMCH superintendent Dr. A. K. Pandey.
