Villagers Reluctant to Give Up Land for NIPER
Patna: April 30, 2007
Residents of Mamalla Chowk under Hilalpur Panchayat in Hajipur on Monday told the Chief Minister they were not willing to give up their lands to set up the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) as proposed by the Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and approved by the state government.
The protestors who arrived at Nitish Kumar's janata darbar in Patna on Monday, told the Chief Minister they would, under no pretext, would give up their lands irrespective of the compensation package announced by the government.
"Even I am losing my ancestral house to the four-lane highways between Patna and Bakhtiarpur but for development of Bihar, I am willing to give up anything," the Chief Minister said.
However, despite much convincing by Kumar, the protestors refused to budge from their stand saying giving up their lands would be the ultimate destruction of them and their families.
The Chief Minister asked the Vaishali District Magistrate to talk to other villagers and find out the reason behind the residents' reluctance and directed the Industrial Development Commissioner S. Vijayraghawan to start looking for an alternate location for NIPER.
