Patna: Aug. 3, 2007
The Patna police on early Friday morning arrested 12 members of an interstate gang of cable thieves as they tried to pull out underground BSNL cable by using the force of a tractor, Sachivalaya DSP Sridhar Mandal said.
As reported, BSNL General Manager (Marketing) S. C. Kaushal while returning to his home on late Thursday night, noticed over 30 men using a tractor to pull out cable from the ground near Harding Park.
Becoming suspicious, Kaushal informed the Special Mobile police unit near Harding Park. Soon a team of Home Guard jawans arrived at the spot and arrested 10 persons, including the tractor driver, while other members of the gang managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.
Later, based on the information provided by the arrested men, the police arrested two more persons in the case, Mandal said.
The police have seized the tractor with the stolen cable.
The same gang had earlier stolen a large quantity of BSNL cable from Patna disrupting phone lines of thousands of subscribers.
A team of Bihar police would soon leave for Delhi to arrest the kingpin of the cable thieves, the DSP said.
