Policeman Suspended for Firing on Flood Victims

Patna: Aug. 5, 2007

The state government on Sunday ordered suspension of the policeman who opened fire at flood victims in Madhubani district last Friday killing one and injuring three others in the process, Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah said.

The decision to suspend constable Aditya Narayan Singh came after a two-member investigative team led by Amanullah concluded the firing at the crowd was unwarranted and the actions displayed 'utter disregard for human safety and security', officials said.

Complying with all the demands of the victim's family, the administration ordered immediate suspension of Singh, lodging of a criminal case against him, and a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to a family member of the victim.

The government would further try to provide a job to the wife of Darshan Thakur, the deceased, Amanullah said.
