Robbery Attempt Foiled; Ex-Policeman Shot
Patna: Aug. 5, 2007
Armed criminals on motorcycles in Parsa Bazaar in Patna on Sunday, while trying to rob a retired policeman, shot and injured the father of the policeman sending him to the hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition.
According to the report, retired policeman Deenanath Kumar was returning to his village after withdrawing Rs. 1.5 lakh from the Gardanibagh branch of State Bank of India. His father Mohan Rai, also a retired policeman, was also riding the motorcycle when four criminals on two motorcycles started to chase Kumar and his father.
As they reached New Etwarpur area, the criminals, at gun points, forced the father-son duo to pull over and tried to snatch the money bag from them.
Hearing their cry for help, a number of passers-by tried to tackle the criminals but the criminals opened fire at the crowd hitting Mohan Rai in his waist.
Before the police could arrive, the criminals, unable to snatch the money bag, escaped while continuing to fire in the air.
Rai was taken to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he is said to be out of any danger.
Attempts are being made to identify and arrest the criminals.
