Flood Death Toll Goes Up; Things Improve a Little
Patna: Aug. 8, 2007
Death toll in Bihar caused by this year's devastating flood went up to 115 on Wednesday with a dozen more victims being reported dead in Begusarai, Khagaria, Madhubani, and East Champaran even as the water level in all major rivers in Bihar showed sign of recession, flood control officials said.
Though most rivers showed signs of recession thanks to the absence of rain for last few days, Ganga in most places was still flowing several inches above the red mark.
On Wednesday, five persons, including three children, were reported drowned in Begusarai when a boat carrying them capsized in Ganga. Three deaths were reported from Khagaria while news of casualties were also received from Madhubani and East Champaran.
Meanwhile, train services between Darbhanga and Samastipur were partially restored on Wednesday evening. A trial run between Darbhanga and Thalwara stations were deemed successful by railway officials who said train services in the region should be restored fully in next 2-3 days.
Engineers are reviewing track conditions in many other areas and only after getting a clean chit from them, railway services would be restored in those areas, DRM Sri Hari said on Wednesday.
In Patna, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, on Wednesday, flagged off Mobile Medical Team to flood-affected areas from Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Wednesday.
"This team provide medical help to flood victims in hard-to-reach places where water is showing signs of recession," Modi said.
