More Hindi-speaking Workers Killed in Assam; Death Toll up to 20

Guahati: Aug. 11, 2007

Domestic terrorists with allegiance to different separatist outfits in Assam on Sunday shot dead four more Hindi-speaking people in the latest spree of violence against them since last Friday night bringing the number of victims to 20, officials in Patna said.

As reported, more than a dozen ULFA and Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) militants barged into a house in Rongbong Haat village. After taking four persons, including a woman, hostage, the terrorists took them to an isolated place where they shot them to death in execution style.

Earlier on Friday night, the same ULFA and KLNLF extremists shot dead 16 persons, including 11 from Bihar sending a wave of panic among Bihari migrant labors in Assam. While seven of the 11 persons were from Saran district, the other four hailed from Siwan, officials in Patna said.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while condemning the carnage against Biharis in strong words, has asked the Assam Chief Minister and the Central Home Ministry to put a complete stop on violence against Bihari migrant labors.

Tarun Gogoi, the Assam Chief Minister, and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, besides some customary lip service, have done little to ease the situation raising the ire of NDA leaders in Bihar.

"We have leaders from Bihar in the UPA government who will not miss an opportunity to condemn the Nitish government for miseries created by the previous Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) government but they do not have the desire or guts to ask the Prime Minister or the Home Minister to intervene in the ongoing violence against Biharis in Assam," a senior Janata Dal (U) leader said.
