Flood Situation Improves in Bihar; Death Toll Rises
Patna: Aug. 11, 2007
The flood situation in Bihar continued to show signs of improvement with no rain in the region for last few days even as four army helicopters and nine army motorboats assisted by over 5000 boats continued to distribute relief packages in many north Bihar districts to keep the number of casualties to a minimum low.
"Though the worst seems to be over in Bihar, the number of casualties due to this year's flood is expected to rise as relief workers pursue search operation in over 11 districts that remain under water despite signs of recession in most major rivers," a government official said on Saturday.
With 44 more deaths reported since Wednesday, official death toll now stands at 170 though officials related with the flood relief operation believe the actual number far exceeds the government statistics.
Earlier Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Patna District Magistrate Dr. B. Rajendra visited Sri Krishna Memorial Hall to review flood relief operators preparing packages containing essential items required for survival.
Expressing his satisfaction with the overall relief operation management, Kumar said hundreds of thousands of villagers affected by this year's devastating flood were still needed to be reached and the government was leaving no stone unturned in ensuring relief reached in all affected areas as fast as humanly possible to keep the number of casualty as low as possible.
