Flood Victims Beat up BDO, Mukhia in Bettiah
Bettiah: Aug. 13, 2007
Even as the water level in all major rivers in Bihar continued to display a downward trend, the frustration level of the flood victims in the state is now at an all-time high which was visible once again in Bettiah where hundreds of people from various Panchayats attacked the BDO's office and beat up the BDO, the pramukh, and the mukhia while holding them hostage for hours.
Equipped with sticks and batons, over 500 villagers set an assault on the BDO's office and after brutally beating BDO Kumar Mangalam, pramukh Madan Mohan Tiwari, and the mukhia of Ganauli Panchayat Uma Kant Singh, tied them up and held them hostage for several hours while accusing them of failing to provide relief to the flood victims.
The extremely agitated mob also vandalized the chief's office damaging furniture, windows, and official vehicles.
The crowd then went on to pelt the BDO office with stones, bricks and other hard objects, injuring a number of other government officials.
The police were also atacked by the raging mob when they tried to intervene causing injuries to nearly half a dozen police jawans leading to a lathi charge during which many protestors were hurt, reports from Bettiah said.
Bettiah DM, however, refuted the claims that the protestors were flood victims and blamed the local Panchayat leaders for today's incident.
FIRs were to be filed against several unidentified miscreants and the police were trying to identify the culprits, the DM said.
