Heavy Rain once again Throws Life out of Gear in Patna
Patna: Aug. 13, 2007
After a brief respite from the incessant rain that turned Patna into a massive landfill throwing life out of gear less than two weeks ago, the city witnessed similar hellish conditions on Monday following heavy downpour that once again exposed the fragile infrastructure of the city incapable of dealing with even the slightest amount of rain.
There was hardly any area in the city that could escape the wrath of Patna's pathetic sewer system that continued to overflow dumping heaps of garbage on the streets.
As usual, some areas were not as lucky as others were where rain water was 'only' ankle deep. In Kankarbagh, Dariyapur, Machhuatoli, Bari Path, Sabjibagh, Bakerganj, Lalji Tola, Mithapur for example, people had to wade in dirty water as high as one's knee or even waist high.
Patna's Gandhi Maidan that is poised to host the Independence Day celebration on Wednesday has also turned into a lake threatening to disrupt the festivity.
Parents preferred to keep their children away from their schools as adults struggled to reach their offices or business establishments.
With road and flyover construction work going on, or abandoned by the construction companies, in nearly half of the city, going from one place to another even in a big gas-guzzler like Bolero was not an easy task let alone moving in autos or two-wheelers who struggled to find the holes that were less dangerous than others.
Besides a customary reminder by the BJP legislator Nitin Navin who directed the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials to clean up the city soon, there was no sign of any attempt to relieve the citizens of their misery caused by the Monday rain.
