12 Dead in Boat Accident in Khagaria

Khagaria: Aug. 14, 2007

At least a dozen people, including women and children, died when their boat carrying nearly three dozen people capsized in the inundated Boorhi Gandak River near Labh village in Khagaria district, officials said on Tuesday.

The country boat was engaged in moving flood victims in Gangaur village to higher areas to escape the wrath of flood when the accident occurred, district officials said.

While some people were able to swim back to safety, others, including seven members of the same family, were swept away in the raging water, Gangaur Block Development Officer S. K. Nirala said.

Divers were pressed into service to search for any survivor and to pull out the bodies of the victims.

A compensation of Rs. 1.5 lakh was announced by the state government for the surviving relatives of the drowning victims, officials.

Meanwhile, with rain once again returning to Bihar after a brief lull of nearly 10 days, flood situation has worsened in many areas where things were looking up just a few days ago.

Road links between Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi were broken again with over five foot of water flowing over National Highway 77.
