Government Opens up Coffer for Speedy Relief to Flood Victims
Patna: Aug. 17, 2007
The state government, following a special meeting of the Cabinet on Friday, announced its decision to allocate Rs. 1,500 crore for the relief of flood victims of Bihar dwarfing the Rs. 350 crore earlier earmarked for them under the Bihar Emergency Fund.
"This would speed up relief work in 19 districts in Bihar that are currently under the impact of severe flood," Cabinet Chief Secretary Girish Shankar in Patna said.
A decision to authorize Patna District Magistrate Dr. B. Rajendra to purchase flood relief items including sattu, rice, chura, candles, and matches was also taken in the Cabinet meet to expedite relief operation in the state, he said.
All financial transactions would be made under close supervision of the Road Construction chief secretary Rajkumar Singh who would ensure complete transparency is maintained to account for every paisa spent on flood relief operation.
Meanwhile, the state government has appealed to the media in Bihar, including PatnaDaily.Com, to step up and and arrange for donations in the Chief Minister's Flood Relief Fund to lessen the impact of this year's devastating flood.
