Six Sentenced to Die in 2004 Kidnapping-Murder Case

Patna: Aug. 18, 2007

A District and Sessions Judge in Patna on Saturday awarded death penalties to six persons convicted on charges of kidnapping a 13-year old boy and murdering him under Phulwarisharif police station on September 21, 2004.

Speedy trial judge Rampravesh Sharma, after hearing the closing arguments from both prosecution and defense, ordered the six accused death by hanging while describing the killing the 'rarest of the rare' considering the brutality of the crime.

Minutes after the judge read the death sentences against Santosh Kumar of Khagaul, Niraj Kumar (Khagaul), Ravi Rana, Ravindra Singh, Gorakhnath Singh and his son Sunny Kumar – all of Phulwarisharif - the police escorted them to the Beur Jail under very tight security arrangement.

13-year old schoolboy and the only son of Adarsh Nagar Road Number 2 resident Sudhir Kumar Sinha, Sumit Kumar was lured by the kidnappers from his school and taken away to an undisclosed location.

A ransom or Rs. 3 lakh was demanded in lieu of the safe return of the boy but before an agreement could be reached between Sumit's abductors and his parents, the kidnappers, fearing imminent arrest, killed the boy and mutilated his body by trying to burn it by acid.

His body was recovered a day after his abduction from near the Phulwarisharif railway station. Marks of cigarette burns were all over Sumit's body.

Meanwhile, the police still remain in dark in the Akaash abduction case. With still no attempt to contact by Akaash's abductors, the parents of the victim are clearly becoming more concerned about the safety of their son who was whisked away by unidentified persons in Shastri Nagar on August 10.
