High Court Directs PMC to Remove Garbage from the City
Patna: Aug. 20, 2007
A Patna High Court division bench comprising Justice Narayan Roy and Justice Mihir Kumar Jha on Monday directed the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) to get rid of all garbage on Patna streets at once and spray the areas where rain water has receded but has left heap of trash spreading various diseases.
The court was hearing on a PIL filed by advocate Shyam Kishore Sharma who said that several areas in Patna were still facing water-logging problem and the DDT sprayed by the district officials in those areas were adulterated and not potent enough to kill the germs.
Some areas including Kankarbagh, Chiraiyantand, Postal Park, Sri Krishna Puri, Ashiana Nagar, and Musallahpur Haat were still under few inches of water and the administration was making no attempt to drain them out, Sharma told the judges.
In PMC's defense, its Commissioner Rana Awadhesh Singh told the court that pumps were being utilized to drain out water from those areas but it would still take a few more days before all such areas are freed from water-logging problem.
The court also expressed its anger over the PMC's dumping of garbage near Gandhi Setu and asked it to remove it without delay.
State Attorney General P. K. Shahi further informed the court of the government's attempt to acquire land on Patna-Gaya Road to develop a landfill that would ease garbage problem in the state capital.
The next day of hearing has been set for September 18.
