Patna: Aug. 22, 2007
In an event organized to honor Bihar farmers at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall in Patna on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi gave awards to 24 prominent progressive farmers from Patna district saying the government was doing everything to improve their lot by providing them modern training and an environment that was conducive to all those engaged in agricultural works.
"The state government has already sent 600 fish farmers from Bihar to Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh where fishery has attained a new height thanks to modern technology and training," Modi said adding similar program was being introduced for those engaged in chicken farming.
Modi also called for reducing the agricultural loan interest rate to 4% saying it would help the farmers of Bihar who are over-burdened with loans making it nearly impossible to make a profit on their produces.
Speaking on the occasion, state Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh said the government was going to compensate farmers affected by this year's flood in the state by providing them Rs. 4,000 per hectare while also trying to revive the farms that were shut down in last few years.
Others present on the occasion included Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, Danapur legislator Asha Sinha, and Patna District Magistrate Dr. B. Rajendra, among others.
