Patna: Aug. 28, 2007
The state government in Bihar, on Tuesday, following a meeting of the Cabinet announced its decision to provide pension to the victims of the 1989 Bhagalpur riot at an annual cost of Rs. 2.56 crore with each victims receiving Rs. 2,500 per month, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said.
The pension that will benefit 853 people in Bhagalpur will go into effect immediately come September, he said.
The Cabinet accepted the interim report of the Bhagalpur riot probe commission headed by Justice N. N. Singh.
Kumar said he has also asked the central government to compensate the Bhagalpur riot victims on the pattern of compensation package given to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the Gujarat riots in 2002.
Taking a dig at the former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) government, the Chief Minister said the justice that had to be meted out during the previous rule is now being delivered by the NDA government in Bihar.
"People are now aware of the facts related to the Bhagalpur riots and charlatans and fake sympathizers of the victims are being exposed one after another," Kumar said without mentioning any name.
