Attempt to Incite Communal Discord in Patna Foiled
Patna: Aug. 29, 2007
In what was described as a blatant attempt to stir up communal tension in Patna, anti-social elements in the state capital on Wednesday threw stones and liquor bottles on two separate places of Hindu worship causing a protest with possibility of a riot looming in the backdrop.
Thanks to the quick response by the district law-enforcement officials, the situation was kept under control despite the presence of agitated crowd at all three locations.
As reported, unidentified persons pelted a temple in Salempur Dumra under Shastri Nagar police station with stones on late Tuesday night.
This led to a protest on Wednesday morning as hundreds of men and women demanded arrests of the miscreants. Sachivalaya DSP Sridhar Mandal along with a police contingent arrived at the temple and assured the crowd of finding and arresting the culprits.
In another incident, stones and empty liquor bottles were thrown at a temple in Machchli Gali near Raja Bazaar causing resentment among the people in the area.
Temple priest Vishnu Pandey said the attack on the temple began at around 2:00 AM on Wednesday morning.
No one was injured in either incident, the police said.
