RJD Desperate to Foment Communal Tension in Bihar: Tiwari

Patna: Aug. 29, 2007

Reacting to the widespread protests against the NDA government in the aftermath of the Bhagalpur police brutality case, Janata Dal (U) national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari, at a press conference in Patna on Wednesday, accused the RJD of trying to stir up communal violence in the state by giving the Bhagalpur incident a communal and political color.

"RJD is desperately trying to incite communal violence in Bihar in the hope of winning Muslim votes in the next elections," Tiwari said.

"On Tuesday, they tried their best in Bhagalpur to foment communal hostility just as they had been doing for last few days in Darbhanga. Thankfully, people of Bihar can see through their evil designs and refuse to be fooled by them anymore," he said.

Tiwari further said that Railway Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was frustrated by the fact that the Nitish government, following the release of the Bhagalpur Riot Commission report, acted expeditiously and agreed to follow up on its recommendations almost to the letter.

"Not only the NDA government complies with the Commission report, it also ordered immediate suspension and arrests of the two policemen in Bhagalpur who were involved in the police brutality case. This is in stark contrast with what the Lalu-Rabri government did following the infamous Bhagalpur riots in 1989. Instead of punishing the guilty, the RJD leader honored him with a medal and provided him state security," Tiwari said at the press conference.
