Dissident JD-U Elects Kushwaha as Party State President
Patna: Aug. 30, 2007
The rebel members of the Janata Dal (U) on Thursday broke away from the main party by holding its own election and electing the dissident poster boy Upendra Kushwaha as the president of the party's state unit while calling the continuance of Rajiv Ranjan Singh, a.k.a. Lallan Singh, MP, as the party state president unconstitutional.
Lallan Paswan, MLA, at a press conference following the supposed party election at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall, said the meeting was attended by 304 out of its 383 members and Kushwaha was unanimously elected the party state president.
"Singh was required by the law to seek endorsement of the state council within six months of his nomination as party president. He, however, he failed to do so making his appointment illegal," said Paswan.
The dissidents also resolved to scrap the suspension of several party leaders including Kushwaha who accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of turning his official residence into a home for 'fun and frolics' by assembling a team of 'yes-men' while ignoring the sentiments of those who did the ground work for the election of Nitish Kumar in the last elections.
Kushwaha also challenged the Chief Minister to contest election head to head against him 'anywhere, anytime except in Nalanda' and 'he would be glad to erase the title of election-loser' hurled at him once and for all.
