Shahabuddin Convicted in yet another Criminal Case
Patna: Aug. 30, 2007
A special court built inside the Siwan Jail to speed up trials against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin who faces criminal charges in over three dozen cases, on Thursday, convicted him in an attempted murder case involving the former Superintendent of Police (SP) of Siwan S. K. Singhal.
Shahabuddin will be sentenced by the same court on Friday.
Gyaneshwar Srivastava, the session judge, delivered the guilty verdict against the MP and two of his bodyguards who, in May 1996, gave a chase to the SP and opened fire at him.
Singhal later identified his attackers as RJD leader Shahabuddin and two of his personal musclemen Jahangir Khan and Mohammed Khalid.
The MP's lawyer Abhay Kumar Rajan said the defense was weighing its legal options and may appeal the verdict in a higher court.
Earlier, a court handed over life imprisonment to Shahabuddin in the 1999 abduction of Chhotelal, a Siwan businessman.
Following his abduction, Chhotelal was never seen again giving rise to the suspicion that he was murdered by the MP and his men and his body disposed off cleverly to hide any evidence.
