Shahabuddin Gets 10 years in SP Attack Case

Siwan: Aug. 31, 2007

Mohammed Shahabuddin, the notorious Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP with a criminal career spanning nearly his entire adulthood, was sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment in the attempted murder case of the former Siwan Superintendent of Police (SP) S. K. Singhal back in 1996.

Special trial court judge Gyaneshwar Srivastava who delivered the guilty verdict on Thursday, sentenced the MP to ten years of hard imprisonment making it the fourth case in last six months in which the RJD leader has been convicted.

Facing over three dozen more criminal cases, Shahabuddin remains imprisoned at Siwan Jail awaiting trials in other cases.

Two of the MP's personal bodyguards were also sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for opening indiscriminate fire at Singhal in 1996.

While Singhal escaped the attack on his life, he later identified his assailants as Mohammed Shahabuddin, then an RJD MLA, and two of his goons as Jehangir Khan and Khalid Mian.

The judge also slapped Rs. 3,500 fine to all three. Failing to pay would result in an additional 9 months in jail.

Earlier this March, a judge gave two years to the MP in a case involving attack on a CPI-ML office.

In May, the same judge who convicted Shahabuddin in the Singhal attack case sent the MP to prison for life in the abduction case of Chhotelal, a Siwan businessman who was never seen after his disappearance.

A first class judicial magistrate, in June, gave three years of imprisonment to the MP after a stolen motorcycle was recovered from his home.
