Notorious Criminals Gunned Down in Gopalganj

Gopalganj: Dec. 2, 2007

Dreaded criminal Raka Tiwari and his equally notorious associate Antu Mishra, responsible for dozens of killings in North Bihar and the eastern parts of the Uttar Pradesh were gunned down by the police in a fierce encounter in Gopalganj on Sunday morning, officials in Gopalganj district said.

Acting on a tip-off, the police surrounded the Minj Stadium area where Tiwari was expected to commit a murder of a prominent person. Soon five men in a Bolero arrived at the stadium but seeing the police, the criminals opened fire at them while trying to escape.

The police retaliated by opening fire of their own and in the process gunned down two criminals while others managed to escape.

The fallen criminals were identified as Tiwari and Raka, wanted in more than two dozen murder and other crimes, the police said.

An AK-47 assault rifle, a carbine, dozens of live cartridges, and two mobiles were recovered from the criminals' possessions.
