Doctors' Strike Appear Imminent

Patna: Dec. 2, 2007

In a joint meeting of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bihar chapter, and the state health services association in Patna on Sunday, the doctors in Bihar announced their decision to go on a statewide strike starting midnight on Tuesday though a final decision to this effect would be made at a meeting on Monday, association spokesperson Dr. Ranjit Kumar said.

"If the government fails to provide a written guarantee to agree to the doctors' demands by Tuesday, the health and medical staff in the state would go on an indefinite strike," Dr. Kumar said.

More than a hundred prominent doctors in the state took part in Sunday's meeting.

A six-member high-level committee made up of IMA national president Dr. Ajay Kumar, former Union Health Minister Dr. C. P. Thakur, Dr. Gopal Prasad Sinha, Dr. S. N. Arya, Dr. A. K. Thakur, and Dr. D. K. Chowdhary, however, is still trying to work out a way to avoid the impending strike that could have devastating effect in the state, reports said.
