Photo by Shashi UttamMedical students of the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna on Tuesday took out a rally to protest against the Center's new medical college policies that extends the period to complete MBBS course from 5.5 years to over 6.5 years.

Chanting anti-Health Minister Dr. Ambumani Ramadoss slogans, the girl students performed mock wedding with the minister saying under the new policy, by the time they finish the medical school, they would be nearly 40 years old and then no man would be willing to wed with them.

The students demanded from the Health Minister to stop playing with their future and lives and work to improve educational environment that remains far from satisfactory at all medical schools in Bihar.

On the issue of Center's suggestion to require all fresh medical graduates to first serve in rural areas, the protestors said that while they had no problem with the idea itself, the government must first release their official certificates within a reasonable timeframe, provide adequate security, and offer competitive stipend to them before forcing them to serve in remote areas.

The protestors would continue their agitation on Wednesday and if the government still failed to satisfy their demands, they would be forced to go on a statewide hunger strike, they said.
