Medical Students' Stir Continues
Patna: Dec. 5, 2007
Medical students in Patna, in continuation of their ongoing stir against the Central government's proposal to raise the timetable to complete higher medical studies, on Wednesday in a symbolic gesture, swept the street with brooms in their hands and washed cars to express their disagreement with the policy.
Donning white coats and stethoscope dangling from their necks, the students, in the spirit of Gandhigiri, swept the Dak Bungalow crossing and washed passing by vehicles to drive their points across that they were not too thrilled about the Health Ministry's plan that would force them to stay in the medical schools for a much longer period.
Meanwhile, outside the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) campus, female students reenacted the mock wedding act earlier performed by the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital students on Tuesday involving the picture of Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss.
"By the time we finish our course under the new scheme, we would be old spinsters with no one willing to marry us. Maybe Ramadoss himself would be interested in all of us," said a future female physician.
Protestors at Dak Bungalow crossing also burnt the effigy of Ramadoss and performed a mock funeral of him by disposing off his 'body' in the Ganges.
